SUMMARY:Fototertúlia (Photo talk) Photography in the archive. Photographic collections and funds in the General Archive of the Barcelona Provincial Council (AGDB)\, by Montserrat Baldomà
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, May 5\, 2025 at 6:30 p.m. – At the Pati Llimona\, c/ de Regomir\, 3\, Barcelona-08002 (free admission)\n\nNext Monday\, May 5\, Montserrat Baldomà\, photographer and archivist\, will explain to us the funds and collections that the Historical Archive of the Barcelona Provincial Council where she works has\, the management of photographs in the archive of a public institution and also the projects and dissemination channels that they have undertaken to disseminate them.\n\nIt is well known that photography has an extraordinary versatility to fit into different areas of knowledge\, communication\, art or memory. But when photography reaches the archival apparatus\, it by default attains the status of a document\, adding a new dimension to the debate about its nature and functions.\nThe identification of this debate is fundamental at a time when photography has achieved a solid enough position in the archive to rethink the way in which it inhabits it. It is with this perspective that the General Archive of the Diputació de Barcelona (AGDB) works to conserve\, manage and disseminate its image collections\, which have increased significantly in recent years. It is time to make some rethinking to improve the value of this heritage\, considering the role that the archive plays in the transmission of documents.\nIn this photo talk we want to present how we do it\, how we organize ourselves\, and which are the most significant collections and collections that are preserved. How are aspects related to the discursive displacement produced by the transition from photography to the archive treated\, or the implementation of the Transversal Gender Plan\, a pioneering initiative developed by the AGDB itself aimed at minimizing intersectional bias in the treatment of documentation.\nThe AGDB safeguards the photographs from the corporation’s Protocol collections\, as well as collections that are historically its own such as those of the Casa de Caritat and the Casa de Maternitat\, the Institute of Culture and the Popular Library for Women\, collections from schools that have depended on the Barcelona Provincial Council such as the Escola Superior d’Agricultura or the Escola d’Enginyera\, the collection of the Monumental Catalogue of the Service for Cataloguing and Conservation of Monuments and other personal collections such as those of Narcís Ricart\, Frederic Juandó Alegret\, Antoni Gallardo i Garriga\, Lola Anglada\, or the collection of the “Catalunya 1934” photography competition of the newspaper Día Gráfico\, among others.\n\nWe look forward to seeing you at Pati Llimona!

SUMMARY:Fototertúlia (PhotoTalk) Heliogravure in the 21st Century\, by Carles Mitjà
DESCRIPTION:We would like to inform you that on Monday\, April 7\, at 6:30 p.m.\, the Photo Talk entitled “HELIOGRAVURE IN THE 21ST CENTURY” will take place at the Pati Llimona. \nIt will be given by Carles Mitjà\, photographer and heliogravure artist. \nFrom the moment Photography became established as a technique that allowed the reproduction of what is called reality\, one of the priorities was the massive distribution of images\, although the problems of permanence over time of copies generated by photochemical means slowed down this development. In this context\, it was in 1852 that William Henry Fox Talbot registered the first patent for a method for transferring photographic information from a positive calotype to small incisions in a metal plate. With the inking and stamping techniques already used for centuries in the practice of traditional engraving\, this plate could generate a very large number of copies free of the chemical residues typical of photochemical techniques\, thus guaranteeing its durability over time. \nHeliogravure evolved throughout the 20th century as a technique for printing photographic images\, both with manual and short-run procedures\, and in its industrial version\, Rotogravure\, for large runs on rotary machines. However\, the emergence of other methods of photographic copying and the improvement in washing and elimination systems of chemical residues caused the number of practitioners to gradually decrease until almost disappearing from 1960. It was not until the 1980s that there was a return to its manual practice. \n \nWith this return and already in the 21st century\, the incorporation of digital imaging technologies in some stages of the process has brought improvements both in the execution of the technique and in the quality of the results obtained. In this discussion\, CARLES MITJÀ will present an analysis in three stages. The first\, a brief historical review. The second will discuss the evolution since the end of the 19th century and throughout the 20th century. Finally\, the challenges that the disappearance of some products causes for continuity in the present 21st century will be discussed. Also\, in this same context\, the advantages that the hybridization of the method with the combined use of photochemical and digital technologies can bring will be shown. \nWe look forward to seeing you there!

SUMMARY:Fototertúlia (PhotoTalk) Rafael Garófano Collection\, donation to the Provincial Historical Archive of Cádiz (AHPCAA) by Ana Martín de Oliva Garófano
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, February 17\, 2025 at 6:30 p.m. \nOnline session at this link: https://meet.jit.si/FOTOTERTULIES2024FCX \nRafael Garófano (1947-2023) was a renowned researcher\, historian and popularizer\, concerned with the conservation and dissemination of visual heritage\, who dedicated most of his research to Cádiz. A graduate in Philosophy and a doctorate in History\, Garófano explored the graphic history of the city through various media\, from pre-imagery to photography\, including stereoscopy and postcards. Therefore\, throughout his life\, Garófano compiled and studied an enormous collection of images that document the historical\, social and cultural evolution of the city of Cádiz and its surroundings. Images that he disseminated in his publications\, sharing his findings with the public. \nThe Rafael Garófano Collection includes diverse visual materials that span the 19th and 20th centuries\, with photographs from all periods and various techniques\, such as daguerreotypes\, ferrotypes\, albumens\, salted paper\, glass negatives\, magic lantern plates and stereoscopies\, in addition to postcards\, engravings and printing plates. Also artifacts such as magic lanterns\, stereographic viewers\, zoetropes and praxinoscopes. \n\n\n       \n\n\nConcerned about the future of his collection\, Garófano decided to donate it while he was still alive to the Provincial Historical Archive of Cádiz (AHPC)\, where the Restorer and Cultural Manager Ana Martín de Oliva Garófano (Rafael’s niece) is in charge of its cataloguing and conservation. \nWe look forward to seeing you there!

SUMMARY:Fototertulia (PhotoTalk) Uncovering archive: Image\, tourism and contemporary creation\, by Begoña Márquez and Andrea Camp
DESCRIPTION:Next Monday\, December 2nd\, the photoTalk will focus on Casa Planas in Palma de Mallorca\, which originated in the Planas Archive of the postcard company with a large photographic archive\, and which has become an interdisciplinary center for the creation and interpretation of contemporary tourism in the Balearic Islands. The conference will be given by Begoña Márquez and Andrea Camp\, cultural manager and head of communication\, respectively. \nThis month it will take place online and you can attend through this link that you will receive by email. \nPlanas is a center for research and contemporary culture located in Palma de Mallorca\, dedicated to artistic creation and heritage recovery. Founded in 2015\, it occupies the space of a former photography factory and functions as a platform for experimentation and support for artists\, who can develop innovative creative processes without the pressure of showing the results in conventional spaces. One of the most outstanding features of the center is the Planas Archive\, one of the most important photographic archives in the history of mass tourism. This archive contains more than 3 million images from the 1940s to the 1990s.\nJosep Planas i Montanyà\, founder of Casa Planas\, was a pioneer in the tourist and promotional image industry through his iconic postcards\, which contributed to the construction of an idealized image of the Balearic Islands. The collection includes social reports\, domestic photographs\, images of celebrities\, tourist advertising and aerial photographs of the islands\, capturing the architectural evolution and transformation of the territory until it became the paradigm of the current tourist destination. In addition\, the archive preserves collections on photography and film techniques\, as well as on the landscape and the transformation of tourism. This documentary wealth makes Casa Planas a unique space for research and reflection on cultural and social impact. \nWe look forward to seeing you there!

SUMMARY:Fototertúlia (PhotoTalk) Exhuming the teacher who promised the sea\, by Sergi Bernal
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends\, \nWe announce that the next Fototertúlia will take place next Monday\, June 3\, at 6:30 p.m. in Pati Llimona. On this occasion\, the session will be led by Sergi Bernal. It is entitled “EXHUMING THE MASTER WHO PROMISED THE SEA“. \nThe session will be recorded on video. \nSee you there! \n \nAt the end of July 1936\, right at the beginning of the Civil War\, the Catalan master Antoni Benaiges disappeared. Two years earlier he had arrived in the town of Bañuelos de Bureba in Burgos ready to apply the Freinet technique to his small rural school\, an innovative pedagogical methodology\, from France\, based on the participation of students and the use of printing. \nFor more than 75 years\, the work and personality of the master remained in the intimacy of the memory of his former students\, his professional colleagues and the family who also retained the desire to know the truth about his disappearance. \nIn August 2010\, on the occasion of the exhumation of a mass grave in the area of La Pedraja (Burgos)\, a witness brought up the figure of the master murdered in July 1936 at the foot of the grave\, saying: “Here está enterrado el maestro de mi pueblo.” Documentarily covering the exhumation work was a Catalan photographer\, who was informed of the passing of the witness saying to her\, “They say that in this pit there is a paisano tuyo\, a Catalan maestro.” \nThis photographer will begin an obsessive investigation to reconstruct the life of the teacher from Mont-roig\, interviewing relatives\, former students and compiling an archive scattered in education magazines from the 1930s\, press and archival collections. That photographer was me. \nThe girls and boys of Bañuelos de Bureba had never seen the sea and in January 1936 their teacher encouraged them to imagine it and describe it. The result was a monographic notebook on the blue immensity. “The sea will be very big\, very wide and very deep.” This is how one of the children in this town of Burgos imagined the sea. The descriptions were repeated: “The sea will be… The sea will be…”. \nThe teacher Antoni Benaiges\, who revolutionized his school by giving the floor to his students with the help of the Freinet printing house\, promised them that in the summer they would go to Mont-roig del Camp to his family’s house to see him for the first time and being able to say: “The sea is… The sea is…”. \nBut the dream of those creatures and the promise of their master were cut short forever on July 19\, 1936 with the outbreak of the Civil War. \n135 murdered republicans were exhumed from the Pedraja graves. Due to the poor condition of the remains\, only 26 reprisal victims have been identified\, none of them being Master Benaiges. \nThis project collects the story of a promise that could not be fulfilled\, and with it\, the memory of the person who made it: Antoni Benaiges\, master who promised the sea. \nThe remains of the La Pedraja graves were not identified\, but I am sure of one thing: there we managed to exhume their memory and thanks to the efforts of many\, we have repaired an oblivion.

SUMMARY:Fototertúlia (PhotoConférence) Cric i Cam et Carnaval 1864\, par Albert Domènech i Alberdi
Intitulé « Cric i Cam et Carnaval 1864 ».

SUMMARY:Fototertulia (PhotoTalk) From engraving to still photo. A 19th century model that explains the pictorial composition in the still photo\, by Miquel Àngel Pintanel\, Filmoteca de Catalunya
DESCRIPTION:We announce that the next Fototertúlia (Photo Conference) will take place next Monday\, March 4\, at 6:30 p.m. in Pati Llimona. On this occasion\, the session will be conducted by Miquel Àngel Pintanel\, who will explore the origins of the pictorial composition of the still photo of the cinema of the 1940s of the 20th century to the prints of the literature of the 19th and early 20th centuries. It is entitled From the engraving to the still photo. A 19th century model that explains the pictorial composition in the still photo. \nThe session will be recorded on video. \nMonday\, March 4\, 2024 from 6:30 p.m. at 7:30 p.m.\nCivic Center Pati Llimona\, Carrer del Regomir\, 3\, Ciutat Vella – Barcelona (Free entry. Limited capacity). \n \nAfter verifying that in the 1940s tools of pictorial composition were used in the still photos of Spanish films\, two hypotheses were elaborated to explain this: that the still photos had traditional artistic training\, which was complicated \, or that they followed some model. We had to go back to the beginnings of the use of the still photo\, but also to the literature editions of the 19th century to be able to find what this model could be. \nThe sequence would be\, in summary\, the following. One of the first uses of photography to promote cinema\, from the beginning of the 20th century\, by film producers\, are a type of press kit with still photographs and a text describing the film. Towards the middle of the 10s of the 20th century\, and in a global way\, these two types of works come together to create the cinematographic novel. \nThis transition could explain how the photographs are organized and presented in the cinematographic novels and why there are still photos that use painting tools to compose. In this Fototertulia we will show what we think is the model they use.

SUMMARY:Fototertúlia (PhotoTalk) Hostalric\, a town of photography\, by Ramon Reyero i Pla
DESCRIPTION:We announce that the next Fototertúlia will take place next Monday\, February 5\, at 6:30 p.m. in Pati Llimona. On this occasion\, the session will be held by Ramon Reyero i Pla\, who through a tour of the photographers who have passed through Hostalric will explain his experience and projects linked to Photography and the history of the territory. Its title is “HOSTALRIC\, A PHOTOGRAPHY VILLAGE”. \nThe session will be recorded on video. \n \nNowadays\, the ease of capturing images with mobile phones and tablets\, so accessible to everyone\, can make us forget the relevance that photography had at the end of the 19th century and throughout the 20th century. The photographs capture people\, the landscape and life\, moments frozen in time that allow us to recover moments that return to explain personal and collective experiences that changes have swept away and that time fades away\, but which at the same time explains who we are. \nFortunately\, Hostalric has a significant number of photographers -professionals and amateurs\, locals and foreigners- who\, since the end of the 19th century\, have recorded with their snapshots our important architectural heritage with the castle and the medieval walls\, the streets and the squares\, and the surroundings of the town\, scenes of the vicissitudes of many generations of women and men from our house. \nThe arrival of digital photography meant the democratization of this new form of art\, photography within everyone’s reach And professional studio photographers gave way\, on occasion\, to other professional photographers\, contemporary artists\, who also have representation in our town. \nHostalric\, a photography village\, wants to bring us closer to the relationship between the village and photography\, with the aim of reviving the memory of the photographers of the past and getting to know the professionals of today \nSee you there!

SUMMARY:Fototertúlia (PhotoTalk) Conservation and restoration of photography\, by Rosina Herrera Garrido
DESCRIPTION:We announce that the next Fototertúlia will take place next Monday\, October 2\, at 6:30 p.m. On this occasion\, the session will be presented by Rosina Herrera\, Art Historian and Graphic Document Conservator-Restorer\, where she will present the book “CONSERVACIÓN Y RESTAURACIÓN DE FOTOGRAFÍA”. \nWe remind you that this gathering will take place online and that you can follow it live through the following link: https://meet.jit.si/FOTOTERTULIES2023FCX \nThis manual is an essential tool for those interested in photography: students\, conservators\, historians\, restorers\, scientists\, photographers\, heritage custodians\, etc. \n\n\n\n\nOn the one hand\, it covers the need for bibliography in Spanish and aspires to be a reference work on the conservation and restoration of photography. And\, on the other hand\, it complements and updates existing manuals translated from other languages that focus on the identification\, preservation and management of collections. \nIn addition to these topics\, the analysis techniques applied to the study of photography\, the identification of those non-photographic processes that can be confused with photographs\, or the recovery of collections after a disaster \nFar from ‘do-it-yourself’\, the restoration tasks described here involve risks to the works and should therefore be carried out by a professional with the appropriate experience. Ethical questions are also raised in relation to the care\, preservation and treatment of the photographic work\nIn this link you can purchase the book in three formats: digital\, e-book and printed: https://www.sinthesis.com/autor/herrera+garrido+rosina

SUMMARY:Fototertúlia (PhotoTalk) Other ways to influence the management of photographic heritage: the case of the Fotobservatorio Fotográfico Mexicano\, by Eunice Miranda Tapia
DESCRIPTION:We announce that the PhotoTalk will take place on September 4\, at 6:30 p.m. On this occasion\, the session will be presented by Eunice Miranda Tapia\, professor in the area of Art History at the University of Seville and expert in photography and contemporary creation. The presentation is titled “Other ways to influence the management of photographic heritage: the case of the Fotobservatorio Fotográfico Mexicano.”\n\n\nThis conference will be broadcasted in streaming and you can follow it live through the following link: https://meet.jit.si/FOTOTERTULIES2023FCX \nDuring the session\, Eunice Miranda will tell us about the Fotobservatorio del Patrimonio Fotográfico Mexicano\, founded in 2016 and directed by Fernando Osorio. This initiative brings together experts from Mexico and other countries for a long-term conservation and study effort of photographic heritage. This includes training\, cataloging and standards setting\, to offer an alternative perspective on photographic heritage management that goes beyond public institutional support. \nAround 2016\, the Photobservatory of Mexican Photographic Heritage was founded\, formed by an important group of specialists in the photographic image of Mexico and several countries\, a project led by photography conservation specialist Fernando Osorio. The creation of this autonomous body has allowed the institutional project of the Image Center to be a series of important actions for the conservation and study of photographic heritage\, training programs in preventive conservation\, cataloguing\, training in the field of directed conservation to all people in charge of a collection\, a list of current photographic collections or the creation of the first Mexican Cataloging Standard. \nThis space seeks to point out\, from a very practical perspective\, the important actions generated by this organization as well as the challenges and solutions that they have been providing in their\nyears of his exercise\, with the aim of pointing out another way of managing photographic heritage beyond the public institutional order. \nWe remind you of the usual practices of our online Fototertulies: \n\nIdentify your name and name when entering the virtual room.\nDuring photography\, turn off the video and audio.\n\nThe session will be recorded on video.

SUMMARY:Fototertúlia THE PHOTOGRAPHY COLLECTION OF THE NATIONAL ART MUSEUM OF CATALONIA UNDER CONSTRUCTION\, by Roser Cambray
DESCRIPTION:We want to remind you that the next Fototertúlia\, which next Monday\, May 8 at 6:30 p.m.\, will be hosted by Roser Cambray\, researcher in the history of photography\, where she will present “THE MUSEUM’S PHOTOGRAPHY COLLECTION UNDER CONSTRUCTION NATIONAL ART OF CATALONIA”. \nWe are very excited to tell you that we have the pleasure of being able to hold this gathering from Center Cívic Pati Llimona\, Carrer del Regomir 3\n08002 Barcelona\, https://goo.gl/maps/AhMpvfaBCaEw3UhB9 \nIn this talk\, Roser Cambrany will give us a review of the history of the photographic collection of the National Art Museum of Catalonia\, showing the alliances and complicities that have made it possible to build the national photographic heritage. \nThe National Art Museum of Catalonia incorporated photography into its collections in 1996 with the creation of a Department of Photography that was born with the purpose of bringing together the most outstanding and representative works of the history of photography \, from the origin of the medium to the present day\, paying special attention to photography taken in Catalonia.\nCurrently\, the collection has a fund of around 54\,000 works\, which has been built up through donations\, such as the funds of Joan Colom\, Josep Maria Casals i Ariet or Pere Formiguera\, with deposits such as that of the Agrupació Fotogràfica de Catalunya or the Oriol Maspons fund and acquisitions of works. \nIn recent years\, in the context of the National Photography Plan\, the collection has grown exponentially and has allowed the incorporation of numerous works by authors from different periods\, which has consolidated the museum’s collection as one of compulsory reference centers for photographic research and creation. \nBut how do you set up a collection of this scope? How is it built? We will review the history of the collection\, showing the alliances and complicities that have made it possible to build this national photographic heritage. \nSee you there!

SUMMARY:Fototertulia (Phot Talk) “Women and Photography in the Spanish 19th century. Two sides of the same coin”\, by Stéphany Onfray
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, March 6\, 2023 at 6:30 p.m. \nPhoto chat online the session will be recorded on video https://meet.jit.si/FOTOTERTULIES2023FCX \nFrom an early age\, photography stood out in popular culture as an ally of modernity\, capable of offering new representation tools to the humblest strata of the population. However\, the importance that the medium had within the configuration of the roles associated with gender in the 19th century has been pointed out much less frequently. In effect\, photography displaced the boundaries between the sexes\, enabling a new capacity for action for women. For the first time\, they had access to a means of expression whose scope was not limited to the private sphere\, and which became the catalyst for a new female subjectivity. However\, the “enthusiasm” that women felt for photography was also important for the expansion of the medium itself. Continuing to ignore the fundamental role that they played in its technical\, social\, cultural and artistic development\, neglects one of the aspects. \n \nTherefore\, we will try to offer a global vision of the beginnings of this connection that women maintained with the camera\, whether as photographers\, portrayed\, collectors or simple consumers. \nButlletí de la fototertúlia (català) \n  \n  \n
