SUMMARY:Fototertúlia (PhotoTalk) Rafael Garófano Collection\, donation to the Provincial Historical Archive of Cádiz (AHPCAA) by Ana Martín de Oliva Garófano
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, February 17\, 2025 at 6:30 p.m. \nOnline session at this link: https://meet.jit.si/FOTOTERTULIES2024FCX \nRafael Garófano (1947-2023) was a renowned researcher\, historian and popularizer\, concerned with the conservation and dissemination of visual heritage\, who dedicated most of his research to Cádiz. A graduate in Philosophy and a doctorate in History\, Garófano explored the graphic history of the city through various media\, from pre-imagery to photography\, including stereoscopy and postcards. Therefore\, throughout his life\, Garófano compiled and studied an enormous collection of images that document the historical\, social and cultural evolution of the city of Cádiz and its surroundings. Images that he disseminated in his publications\, sharing his findings with the public. \nThe Rafael Garófano Collection includes diverse visual materials that span the 19th and 20th centuries\, with photographs from all periods and various techniques\, such as daguerreotypes\, ferrotypes\, albumens\, salted paper\, glass negatives\, magic lantern plates and stereoscopies\, in addition to postcards\, engravings and printing plates. Also artifacts such as magic lanterns\, stereographic viewers\, zoetropes and praxinoscopes. \n\n\n       \n\n\nConcerned about the future of his collection\, Garófano decided to donate it while he was still alive to the Provincial Historical Archive of Cádiz (AHPC)\, where the Restorer and Cultural Manager Ana Martín de Oliva Garófano (Rafael’s niece) is in charge of its cataloguing and conservation. \nWe look forward to seeing you there!

SUMMARY:Fototertúlia (PhotoTalk) Heliogravure in the 21st Century\, by Carles Mitjà
DESCRIPTION:We would like to inform you that on Monday\, April 7\, at 6:30 p.m.\, the Photo Talk entitled “HELIOGRAVURE IN THE 21ST CENTURY” will take place at the Pati Llimona. \nIt will be given by Carles Mitjà\, photographer and heliogravure artist. \nFrom the moment Photography became established as a technique that allowed the reproduction of what is called reality\, one of the priorities was the massive distribution of images\, although the problems of permanence over time of copies generated by photochemical means slowed down this development. In this context\, it was in 1852 that William Henry Fox Talbot registered the first patent for a method for transferring photographic information from a positive calotype to small incisions in a metal plate. With the inking and stamping techniques already used for centuries in the practice of traditional engraving\, this plate could generate a very large number of copies free of the chemical residues typical of photochemical techniques\, thus guaranteeing its durability over time. \nHeliogravure evolved throughout the 20th century as a technique for printing photographic images\, both with manual and short-run procedures\, and in its industrial version\, Rotogravure\, for large runs on rotary machines. However\, the emergence of other methods of photographic copying and the improvement in washing and elimination systems of chemical residues caused the number of practitioners to gradually decrease until almost disappearing from 1960. It was not until the 1980s that there was a return to its manual practice. \n \nWith this return and already in the 21st century\, the incorporation of digital imaging technologies in some stages of the process has brought improvements both in the execution of the technique and in the quality of the results obtained. In this discussion\, CARLES MITJÀ will present an analysis in three stages. The first\, a brief historical review. The second will discuss the evolution since the end of the 19th century and throughout the 20th century. Finally\, the challenges that the disappearance of some products causes for continuity in the present 21st century will be discussed. Also\, in this same context\, the advantages that the hybridization of the method with the combined use of photochemical and digital technologies can bring will be shown. \nWe look forward to seeing you there!

SUMMARY:Fototertúlia (Photo talk) Photography in the archive. Photographic collections and funds in the General Archive of the Barcelona Provincial Council (AGDB)\, by Montserrat Baldomà
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, May 5\, 2025 at 6:30 p.m. – At the Pati Llimona\, c/ de Regomir\, 3\, Barcelona-08002 (free admission)\n\nNext Monday\, May 5\, Montserrat Baldomà\, photographer and archivist\, will explain to us the funds and collections that the Historical Archive of the Barcelona Provincial Council where she works has\, the management of photographs in the archive of a public institution and also the projects and dissemination channels that they have undertaken to disseminate them.\n\nIt is well known that photography has an extraordinary versatility to fit into different areas of knowledge\, communication\, art or memory. But when photography reaches the archival apparatus\, it by default attains the status of a document\, adding a new dimension to the debate about its nature and functions.\nThe identification of this debate is fundamental at a time when photography has achieved a solid enough position in the archive to rethink the way in which it inhabits it. It is with this perspective that the General Archive of the Diputació de Barcelona (AGDB) works to conserve\, manage and disseminate its image collections\, which have increased significantly in recent years. It is time to make some rethinking to improve the value of this heritage\, considering the role that the archive plays in the transmission of documents.\nIn this photo talk we want to present how we do it\, how we organize ourselves\, and which are the most significant collections and collections that are preserved. How are aspects related to the discursive displacement produced by the transition from photography to the archive treated\, or the implementation of the Transversal Gender Plan\, a pioneering initiative developed by the AGDB itself aimed at minimizing intersectional bias in the treatment of documentation.\nThe AGDB safeguards the photographs from the corporation’s Protocol collections\, as well as collections that are historically its own such as those of the Casa de Caritat and the Casa de Maternitat\, the Institute of Culture and the Popular Library for Women\, collections from schools that have depended on the Barcelona Provincial Council such as the Escola Superior d’Agricultura or the Escola d’Enginyera\, the collection of the Monumental Catalogue of the Service for Cataloguing and Conservation of Monuments and other personal collections such as those of Narcís Ricart\, Frederic Juandó Alegret\, Antoni Gallardo i Garriga\, Lola Anglada\, or the collection of the “Catalunya 1934” photography competition of the newspaper Día Gráfico\, among others.\n\nWe look forward to seeing you at Pati Llimona!

SUMMARY:Fototertulia (PhotoTalk): Alejandrina Alba: una fotógrafa decimonónica con nombre propio\, by Marta López Beriso
DESCRIPTION:We’d like to inform you about the next photo talk\, which will take place online next Monday\, September 15th\, at 6:30 p.m.\n\nIt will be led by Marta López Beriso\, who will talk about Alejandrina Alba\, an enterprising 19th-century photographer who deserves recognition beyond being the wife or widow of those listed as owners of the photography studios where she worked.\n\nThis is the link to the session: https://meet.jit.si/FOTOTERTULIES2025FCX\n\nWe look forward to seeing you!\n\n\n\n\nAlejandrina Alba Muñoz (1837–ca. 1915) practiced photography for almost forty years\, with a steady but overshadowed career under the names of her two husbands. In practice\, it was she who assumed the former’s absences and maintained the studio while the latter pursued his career as a cartographer. It is therefore not surprising that\, during her first widowhood\, Alba registered the studio in her own name\, without presenting herself as “widow of” or “successor of\,” and declared herself the principal photographer for all intents and purposes. This determination\, overshadowed during her marriages\, reappeared later in her repeated and unsuccessful claims for a widow’s pension. Alba’s case demonstrates not only how 19th-century women photographers navigated the legal and social obstacles of their time\, but also the reluctance of recent historiography to fully recognize them as authors when men held the positions. Her career forces us to reconsider the very concept of authorship\, since her roles and responsibilities far exceeded those attributed to them today when they are defined as mere collaborators.

SUMMARY:Fototertúlia (PhotoTalk) El projecte “Bathroom Portraits”\, by Mia Alsina\, cultural manager\, and milos tzare\, photographer
DESCRIPTION:We’d like to inform you of the next photo discussion\, which will take place on the first Monday of the month\, November 3rd\, at 6:30 p.m. at Pati Llimona.\n\nCultural manager Mia Alsina and photographer milos tzare will lead the discussion\, explaining the “Bathroom Portraits” project and how mathematics has influenced their artistic work.\n\nConceived more than twenty years ago\, the ideas and plot of Bathroom Portraits (Project 00) developed by Milos Tzare are extremely relevant today.\nIn an age where we are subjected to the public display of our lives\, even in the most intimate aspects\, the desire to seek a place where privacy is respected\, in silence and absolute isolation\, where no one can access it\, is more necessary than ever.\nWith absolute dedication and a focus on the artistic project Bathroom Portraits for twenty years\, Milos Tzare underwent a metamorphosis in which he evolved from a mathematician to a photographer. It was this mutation that generated a mental structure in which mathematics became a tool that complemented and completed his artistic perception.\nThus\, by being able to use mathematical language as another tool for artistic creation\, Milos developed a sense of freedom.\n\nThis event is part of the events of this year’s second edition of the 39/11 November Photography Festival.\n\nSee you there!

SUMMARY:Fototertulia (PhotoTalk) Charles Clifford: beyond his monumental work\, by Rachel Bullough Ainscough
DESCRIPTION:CHARLES CLIFFORD: BEYOND HIS MONUMENTAL WORK\nBy Rachel Bullough Ainscough\, photography historian and PhD in Art History\nMonday\, December 1\, 2025 at 6:30 p.m.\nPati Llimona Civic Center\, Regomir Street\, 3\, Barcelona – 08002. (Free admission. Limited capacity).\n\nThe exhibition “Charles Clifford and the monumental record of Spain”\, recently inaugurated at the Museum of the University of Navarra in Pamplona\, presents an exhaustive tour of the photographer’s work through the monumental views contained in the posthumous album “Álbum Monumental”\, distributed in volumes (5 in total\, including an Appendix) between 1863\, the year of his death\, and 1870.\n\n \n\nWith around 500 photographs on display\, including those hanging on the walls\, forming part of albums and in audiovisuals\, this is the largest exhibition of Clifford’s work seen to date and establishes the photographer as one of the greats of the 19th century in Spain.\n\nAfter reviewing the exhibition\, Rachel Bullough will go beyond Clifford’s monumental work to focus on other lesser-known aspects of his life and work\, as well as that of his wife Jane\, a life that\, in both cases\, remains a mystery. Recent research\, including the one currently being carried out\, reveals new data that little by little help to fill the gaps in the bibliography and allow us to offer a more complete profile of this unique marriage.\n\nWe look forward to seeing you there!\n\n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Fototertulia (PhotoTalk) DERROTA. COÁGULOS FOTOGRÁFICOS\, ESCRITURA Y MEMORIAS OBRERAS. Visual Conference based on the works of Kati Horna and Margaret Michaelis Sachs\, by Noelia Pérez Sández
DESCRIPTION:It will be given by Noelia Pérez Sández\, historian of photography and member of the University of Barcelona and the Institute of Photographic Studies of Catalonia. The photo talk will take place on Tuesday\, April 7 at 6:30 p.m.\, at the Pati Llimona.\n\nIt will discuss how history can be explained through photography\, based on a historical memory project that was born from the study of photographers Kati Horma and Margaret Michaelis during the Civil War.\n\nThis conference aims to address the process of constructing the book Defeat as a poetic-historiographic exercise that questions the official way of writing the history of photography.\nBased on photographs taken by Kati Horna and Margaret Michaelis during the Spanish Civil War\, the talk proposes to consider photographic events as clots of time\, affection and conflict that resist linear and canonical narration. From\nfragmented\, displaced and subaltern productions\, it is considered how to construct stories of photography that do not reproduce the violence of a single\, patriarchal and monumental genealogy\, but rather respond to the remains\, silences and material conditions of the images.\nVisual essay and poetic writing appear here not as accessories but as critical strategies that allow activating a workers’ memory of photography in the context of the Spanish state\, assuming defeat not as failure\, but as a position from which to write against the epic\, progress and the closure of historical meaning.\nWe look forward to seeing you!

SUMMARY:Fototertúlia (PhotoTalk) DinouVint: archive photographs and memory\, by Albert Gusi
DESCRIPTION:We would like to inform you that the next photo talk will take place on Monday\, May 4\, at 6:30 p.m.\, at Pati Llimona.\n\nIn this session\, we will be joined by Albert Gusi\, visual artist and photographer\, who will explain the new project in which he is participating\, which consists of linking Photography and Art\, and artistic residencies as a nest of creation based on archive photographs. He will also talk to us about the Panoramic festival and the Grisart_Lab platform.\n\nThe DinouVint project was born from the desire for historical and heritage photography to have its own space that goes through multiple scenarios: from being part of the museum story in museums such as the MNAC to being naturally programmed in festivals\, halls\, archives\, civic centers\, etc.\, with an in-depth study by professionals from different fields such as users\, researchers\, photographers\, etc. Since the Primavera Fotogràfica\, we have been losing the presence and exploration of our references.\n\nGrisart Lab has a wide training proposal and organizes the Panoramic festival.\n\nWe look forward to seeing you there!!

SUMMARY:Fototertulia (PhotoTalk) Photography and Architecture in the COAC Historical Archive: connections in diversity\, by Andreu Carrascal Simon\, archivist
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, July 6\, 2026 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.\n\nPati Llimona Civic Center\, carrer del Regomir\, 3\, Barcelona – 08002\n\nWe invite you to participate in the next photo talk that will take place next Monday\, July 6 at 6:30 p.m.\n\nOn this occasion\, we will be accompanied by the photographer ANDREU CARRASCAL\, archivist of the College of Architects of Barcelona and Catalonia. On the occasion of the declaration of Barcelona as the City of Architecture for the year 2026\, the presentation aims to offer an overview of the photographic archives\, typologies of images\, contributions and significance of photographic heritage in the field of Architecture\, both at a documentary level\, as heritage and from the point of view of creating the landscape and urban space.\n\nThese connections in diversity aim to highlight the profession and photographs as an essential document that allows us to reflect\, articulate and define the architecture of the past and project that of the future\, also from a multidisciplinary perspective.\n\nSince the beginning of the invention of photography\, the author/image producer has generated a story\, a look\, that working technically and at the same time contributing his subjectivity within a relative creativity presents us with a way of seeing the architectural object. The author’s freedom can be conditioned by the needs of the client\, who demands an exact photograph of the construction process\, or it can be free and express itself with all the notes that the light\, the framing\, the focus and other tools at hand can use.\n\nThus\, the story can be cold and technical\, or deliberately creative\, becoming an inspiration for trends not only in the way of taking the photograph but in the formality of future architectures\, becoming the photographer the inspirer of the architect\, and reversing the traditional professional roles. The story can be a more or less hidden ideology or it can simply be an exceptional witness to the disappeared architecture or the discovered architecture. The relationship between photographer and architect (without this being the only one in the photographic stories) can become so intense that the architecture of one cannot assert itself without the creativity of the other\, reaching a symbiosis that we could describe as intimate. The culmination could be given by the number of architects who have produced a stimulating photograph\, beyond their professional activity.\n\nIf there is a place where all these views can be seen\, it is without a doubt in the Archives\, true containers of stories in time of photographed architecture. The Historical Archive of the College of Architects of Catalonia has preserved since its creation in 1969 thousands and thousands of photographs that show the activity of architects from the 19th to 21st centuries\, both through the photographic archives it manages\, such as those of Oriol Maspons or Lluís Casals\, and the photographic documentary heritage that is part of the files of architects’ offices\, as well as subjective collections based on geographical\, thematic or onomastic criteria\, which allow it to be a reference in the explanation of architecture through the photographic image.\n\nBefore the summer holidays\, we are waiting for you at the last session until September at the Pati Llimona.
