SUMMARY:Exhibition Bromóleos. Fotografía pictorialista. Joaquim Pla Janini
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition showing the relationship between the work of the author Joaquim Pla Janini\, pictorial photography and the sea. This is a unique opportunity to disseminate the work of this photographer\, as well as his unknown and little studied slope over the sea\, showing for the first time the collection of the 34 transported bromoils that belong to the collection of the Barcelona Maritime Museum. \nThe author’s trajectory is contextualized with the sociocultural situation of the time\, establishing connections with the pictorialist current\, relations with contemporary photographers and photographic groups\, the national and international positioning of the work through competitions and exhibitions\, the singularity of the photographic technique (the transported bromoil)\, and the most personal figure of the author.

SUMMARY:Conference "El futur de Xile en les fotografies del salnitre"\, by Xavier Ribas\, at the KBr
DESCRIPTION:The visual history of saltpetre\, popularly known as “Chilean nitrate”\, consists of a few (few) photo albums made by saltpetre entrepreneurs\, mostly of British origin. It is a photographic record documenting the process of saltpeter extraction in the Atacama Desert between the 1870s and 1920s. This legacy\, which is preserved in Chilean archives and libraries\, exudes capitalist and colonial rhetoric. The question is: How do we approach these photo albums critically ?; how is it possible to relate the experience of the saltpeter worker and his history of resistance from these photographs ?; how do we think about photographs considering what was left out of the image ?\, and finally how do we look at them from their historical development? As Andrea Jösch said\, these images anticipate a future of ruin and a coup. \nXavier Ribas is a photographer and professor at the University of Brighton and the Polytechnic University of Valencia. He studied Social Anthropology at the University of Barcelona and Documentary Photography at the Newport School of Art\, Media and Design. His photographic work explores disputed places and stories\, the geographies of abandonment\, temporary settlements\, and border territories. Since 2009 he has been part of the collective research project “Traces of Nitrate” on the extractive processes in Chile and the commercial networks that converge in the stock market of the City of London. He lives and works in London.

SUMMARY:Conference "Les reparacions fotogràfiques i el més-que-humà"\, by T. J. Demos\, at the KBr
DESCRIPTION:In the face of the tragic event of extinction of the multispecies we are experiencing\, the depiction of the disappearance of the more-than-human appears as a melancholy photographic practice. But what about the politics of its aesthetics? The imagery of lost species can cynically commodify the loss or serve as a liberal duel repertoire\, connecting photography with a necrospeculative economy. But could its associated ecological effects of pain and despair connect mourning with militancy\, a transformative anti-capitalist climate justice policy\, and a collective testimony that fuels the demands of a future reparator? How do you see repairs from a global crisis? And how could contemporary photography have a restorative horizon in itself? \n(Intervention in English with simultaneous translation into Spanish) \nT. J. Demos is a professor in the Department of Art History and Visual Culture at the University of California (Santa Cruz) and founding director of the University’s Center for Creative Ecology. He writes about contemporary art and global politics and investigates the intersection of visual culture\, radical politics\, and political ecology. He is the author of numerous books\, including Beyond the World’s End: Arts of Living at the Crossing (Duke\, 2020). He recently co-edited The Routledge Companion on Contemporary Art\, Visual Culture\, and Climate Change (2021) and led the Sawyer Seminar-funded Beyond the End of the World research project\, funded by the Mellon Foundation (2019-21). He chairs the Climate Collective\, which offers public programming at the MAAT (Lisbon).

SUMMARY:Fototertúlia (Photo Talk) "TOMÁS CAMARILLO\, FOTÓGRAFO DE GUADALAJARA"\, by Víctor Iniesta Sepúlveda
DESCRIPTION:Next Monday\, September 5 at 6:30 p.m.\, the online photo talk will take place by Víctor Iniesta Sepúlveda\, entitled: “TOMÁS CAMARILLO\, FOTÓGRAFO DE GUADALAJARA.”\nYou can follow the photo talk live through the link: https://meet.jit.si/FOTOTERTULIES2022 \nRemember\, as has been done so far in online photo gatherings\, that: \n\nIdentify yourself with a name when entering the virtual room.\nDuring the photo gathering\, have the video and audio disabled.\nThe session will be recorded on video.\n\nIn the early years of the 20th century\, a young immigrant heard how some people from Madrid made fun of Guadalajara\, his land\, then a rural\, impoverished and isolated space. Those pejorative comments were\, years later\, the revulsive for that alcarreño to use photography and cinema to claim the cultural wealth of his province and reinforce the identity ties of his countrymen. \nThis session will talk about Tomás Camarillo\, a self-taught amateur\, entrepreneur\, with cultural concerns and committed to the care of heritage. With an exhaustive method\, he assembled a large visual repertoire documenting landscapes\, views of towns\, and immovable\, movable\, and intangible cultural assets. Likewise\, he took pains to publicize his creations: he showed his photographs in critically acclaimed exhibitions and publications\, and exhibited his films in screenings that thrilled the public. \n  \n\n\nCasa Camarillo. Photographic exhibition at the author’s home\, 1944. Centro de Estudios de Castilla-La Mancha\, Universidad de Castilla La Mancha. \nRecently\, his work\, bequeathed to the Provincial Government of Guadalajara\, has been enriched after the discovery of more copies from his private collection\, made up of family and travel stereoscopic views. Preserved after almost a hundred years\, his films and snapshots are exceptional testimonies of a valuable cultural heritage\, today forgotten\, transformed or disappeared. \n  \n

There were many fans who took the first steps in its facilities\, the scene of a photographic practice understood as a passion or even a vocation. This dedication gave rise to an important generation of photographers\, where we find Dr. Plan Janini\, Claudi Carbonell\, Joan Porqueras or Antoni Campañá. However\, and despite the frequent allusions to its activities in the main textbooks on the history of photography\, the AFC had not previously been the subject of study. This is the reason that prompted her to develop a doctoral thesis on the its origins and consolidation\, which he was finally able to defend last May 6 at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona \nAntoni Campañá Bandranas Tracció de sang Bromoli Fons AFC \nVictoria’s thesis is the first comprehensive study to be made of the Agrupació\, which was a key meeting point for photographers -professionals and amateurs- from which great names in the history of photography have emerged country\, and which has reached the present day where it continues its activity. \nBrochure for the photo talk (catalan) \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Fototertulia (Phot Talk) “Women and Photography in the Spanish 19th century. Two sides of the same coin”\, by Stéphany Onfray
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, March 6\, 2023 at 6:30 p.m. \nPhoto chat online the session will be recorded on video https://meet.jit.si/FOTOTERTULIES2023FCX \nFrom an early age\, photography stood out in popular culture as an ally of modernity\, capable of offering new representation tools to the humblest strata of the population. However\, the importance that the medium had within the configuration of the roles associated with gender in the 19th century has been pointed out much less frequently. In effect\, photography displaced the boundaries between the sexes\, enabling a new capacity for action for women. For the first time\, they had access to a means of expression whose scope was not limited to the private sphere\, and which became the catalyst for a new female subjectivity. However\, the “enthusiasm” that women felt for photography was also important for the expansion of the medium itself. Continuing to ignore the fundamental role that they played in its technical\, social\, cultural and artistic development\, neglects one of the aspects. \n \nTherefore\, we will try to offer a global vision of the beginnings of this connection that women maintained with the camera\, whether as photographers\, portrayed\, collectors or simple consumers. \nButlletí de la fototertúlia (català) \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Guided visit to the Ilse Bing and Anastasia Samoylova exhibitions at the KBr Fundació MAPFRE center.
DESCRIPTION:We inform you of the next activity that will take place on Thursday\, March 16. We invite you to come to the guided tour of the KBr Center’s current exhibitions: <i>Ilse Bing</i> and <i>Anastasia Samoylova. Image cities</i>. The visit will begin at 7:00 pm behind closed doors. \nAs always\, prior registration is required on the form you received by email. If a partner wants to attend with an accompanying person\, they can indicate this on the form. Three days before the visit\, members who have asked to come accompanied will be informed whether or not there are any places available. \nIlse Bing’s extensive life and artistic career (1899-1998) offers an interesting reflection of the main cultural trends and historical vicissitudes of the 20th century. In his photographs\, the aesthetic proposals of successive artistic movements and styles are combined with a singularly personal look due to his humanist imprint and intense (but soberly expressed) social awareness. Ilse Bing was also one of the women who\, together with such relevant figures as Nora Dumas\, Gisèle Freund or Berenice Abbot\, achieved as photographers a projection and recognition from which women had been excluded until then. His work has been preserved scattered among various collections in Europe and the United States\, and this is the first occasion that an exhibition makes his entire career known at a national level. \n \nOn the other hand\, the project <i>Image Cities</i> by the Russian-American photographer Anastasia Samoylova is the winning proposal of the first edition of the KBr Photo Award\, launched by the MAPFRE Foundation in 2021. The project is a unique visual study of the integration between the photographic image and the urban environment\, built in general from the superimposition of collages. The project\, which began in Moscow and New York in 2021\, has been able to be completed in other cities such as Amsterdam\, Paris\, London\, Brussels\, Tokyo\, Madrid and Barcelona thanks to the KBr Photo Award. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Conference A new light on Axel Munthe\, by Jordi Mestre.
DESCRIPTION:AXEL MUNTHE. STORY OF A JOURNEY \nBy Jordi Mestre i Vergés \nFriday\, April 28\, 2023 at 6:30 p.m.\nPati Limona Civic Centre. Carrer del Regomir\, 3\, 08002 Barcelona (Free entry. Limited capacity).\nIn this case\, to attend the talk\, prior registration is required at the link you received by mail. \nRecently\, the photographer\, chemist and restaurateur Jordi Mestre has worked on the recovery of Axel Munthe’s photographic legacy in Italy. \nAxel Munthe (1857-1949) was an important figure on many levels. Doctor by profession\, great defender of human rights and culture\, being also a successful literary author. In addition\, his interest in photography led him to practice it prolifically between the last quarter of the 19th century and the first of the 20th. \nThe fund comes into the hands of Jordi Mestre through Katriona Munthe\, the author’s granddaughter. It is from here that a journey begins that begins with the belief that you are in front of a family collection with no more importance than this\, and that turns out to open the way to the story of one of the most fascinating characters of his time \nAfter the restoration and digitization of these photographs\, the project culminated in an exhibition at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples -MANN- made by Katriona Munthe\, Michele Iodice and Jordi Mestre himself. \n \n

SUMMARY:Guided tour IN FOCUS! The female presence in the Agrupació Fotogràfica de Catalunya (1923-1970)\, at Casa Elizalde\, by Victoria Bonet
DESCRIPTION:We inform you of the next activity that will take place on Wednesday 3 May at 6.30pm. We invite you to come to the Cultural Center of La Casa Elizalde for a guided tour of the ENFOCADES exhibition! The female presence in the Agrupació Fotogràfica de Catalunya (1923-1970) with the curator of the exhibition\, Victòria Bonet. \nAs always\, prior registration is required. If a partner wants to attend with a companion\, he or she can register him or her on the form\, but he or she will be on a waiting list. You can find the registration form in the message you received by mail. \n\n\n\nA journey through the female presence in Agrupació Fotogràfica de Catalunya (AFC)\, an organization created in 1923 in Barcelona to promote the art of photography and which this year reaches its centenary.\nThe AFC decidedly bet on promoting the hobby among women at times when they suffered from a special social and cultural relegation. Thanks to the organization of specialized courses or collective exhibitions of their works\, a great generation of pioneers emerged in the fifties\, the so-called “Women’s Group of the AFC”.\nPhotographers of recognized prestige such as Carme Garcia\, Montserrat Vidal-Barraquer\, Glòria Salas\, Milagros Caturla\, Roser Oromí\, Conxita Viñals or Rosa Szücs were part of it. A story of overcoming and will that managed to present a modern and renewing look.

How is it built? We will review the history of the collection\, showing the alliances and complicities that have made it possible to build this national photographic heritage. \nSee you there!

Xavier Miserachs\, Ramon Masats\, Ricard Terré\, Francesc Català Roca\, Joaquim Pla Janini\, Claudi Carbonell\, Antoni Campañà or Joan Porqueras are some of these examples. In addition to them and many others\, they also made room – as something exceptional at that time – a whole series of female photographers among which we find names such as Mey Rahola\, Rosa Szücs\, Glòria Salas or Montserrat Vidal-Barraquer and Flaquer\, which are currently being restored to their rightful place in the history of photography in Catalonia. \nThis year 2023\, the centenary of this organization is celebrated with a whole series of activities and exhibitions and also\, in honor of this anniversary\, a book has been prepared that includes\, over 240 pages\, the journey of Agrupació Fotogràfica de Catalunya in these 100 years of living history.

This initiative brings together experts from Mexico and other countries for a long-term conservation and study effort of photographic heritage. This includes training\, cataloging and standards setting\, to offer an alternative perspective on photographic heritage management that goes beyond public institutional support. \nAround 2016\, the Photobservatory of Mexican Photographic Heritage was founded\, formed by an important group of specialists in the photographic image of Mexico and several countries\, a project led by photography conservation specialist Fernando Osorio. The creation of this autonomous body has allowed the institutional project of the Image Center to be a series of important actions for the conservation and study of photographic heritage\, training programs in preventive conservation\, cataloguing\, training in the field of directed conservation to all people in charge of a collection\, a list of current photographic collections or the creation of the first Mexican Cataloging Standard. \nThis space seeks to point out\, from a very practical perspective\, the important actions generated by this organization as well as the challenges and solutions that they have been providing in their\nyears of his exercise\, with the aim of pointing out another way of managing photographic heritage beyond the public institutional order. \nWe remind you of the usual practices of our online Fototertulies: \n\nIdentify your name and name when entering the virtual room.\nDuring photography\, turn off the video and audio.\n\nThe session will be recorded on video.

SUMMARY:Fototertúlia (PhotoTalk) Conservation and restoration of photography\, by Rosina Herrera Garrido
DESCRIPTION:We announce that the next Fototertúlia will take place next Monday\, October 2\, at 6:30 p.m. On this occasion\, the session will be presented by Rosina Herrera\, Art Historian and Graphic Document Conservator-Restorer\, where she will present the book “CONSERVACIÓN Y RESTAURACIÓN DE FOTOGRAFÍA”. \nWe remind you that this gathering will take place online and that you can follow it live through the following link: https://meet.jit.si/FOTOTERTULIES2023FCX \nThis manual is an essential tool for those interested in photography: students\, conservators\, historians\, restorers\, scientists\, photographers\, heritage custodians\, etc. \n\n\n\n\nOn the one hand\, it covers the need for bibliography in Spanish and aspires to be a reference work on the conservation and restoration of photography. And\, on the other hand\, it complements and updates existing manuals translated from other languages that focus on the identification\, preservation and management of collections. \nIn addition to these topics\, the analysis techniques applied to the study of photography\, the identification of those non-photographic processes that can be confused with photographs\, or the recovery of collections after a disaster \nFar from ‘do-it-yourself’\, the restoration tasks described here involve risks to the works and should therefore be carried out by a professional with the appropriate experience. Ethical questions are also raised in relation to the care\, preservation and treatment of the photographic work\nIn this link you can purchase the book in three formats: digital\, e-book and printed: https://www.sinthesis.com/autor/herrera+garrido+rosina

SUMMARY:Guided visit to the Skiá – Graphé exhibition. The drawing of the shadow\, by Martí Llorens and Rebecca Mutell\, authors of the exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends\, \nWe inform you of the next activity that will take place on Friday\, December 15 at 7:00 p.m. We invite you to come to the Biblioteca Esquerra de l’Eixample – Agustí Centelles for a guided tour of the Skiá – Graphé. The drawing of the shadow exhibition\, framed within the Photointerpretations project. The visit will be led by Martí Llorens and Rebecca Mutell\, authors of the exhibition. \nAs always\, prior registration is required. If a partner wants to attend with a companion\, he or she can register him or her on the form\, but he or she will be on a waiting list. You will find in the attached document more information about the visit and the registration form you received in the mail. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Greek words skiá\, ‘shadow’\, and graphé\, ‘drawing’ – that is\, the technique of drawing and representing objects through their shadow – were the terms W. H. F. Talbot chose in 1835 to designate the images that managed to fix on a paper sensitized with silver chloride. The sketch\, then\, represented the beginning of the photographic research of this renowned English polymath. \nFollowing in the footsteps of Talbot’s photographic essays\, Martí Llorens and Rebecca Mutell decided to portray the city of Girona using the ski graphic procedure. The technical nature of this procedure\, in which the appearance of the image by direct blackening of the paper necessarily takes place in the same place where it is exposed to sunlight\, means that the genesis of these photographs belongs entirely and unavoidable in this city. Given that the main subject of the sketches – which Talbot would later call photogenic drawings – were botanical specimens\, and given the character of Girona’s parks and urban gardens\, they chose to make a series of frames by contact of leaves and plants of some of these parks.\nThis same procedure was used as a negative for a large format camera. If 180 years ago Talbot had needed an exposure time of several minutes to make a frame\, the fact of using that same paper inside a camera forced them to exposures that\, in their case\, they were not less than two hours in the middle of summer. As for the positivity\, the symbiosis of a historical photographic procedure with a contemporary technique seemed fruitful to them. So they digitized the paper negatives so they could print them in a much larger format.

SUMMARY:Fototertúlia (PhotoTalk) Hostalric\, a town of photography\, by Ramon Reyero i Pla
DESCRIPTION:We announce that the next Fototertúlia will take place next Monday\, February 5\, at 6:30 p.m. in Pati Llimona. On this occasion\, the session will be held by Ramon Reyero i Pla\, who through a tour of the photographers who have passed through Hostalric will explain his experience and projects linked to Photography and the history of the territory. Its title is “HOSTALRIC\, A PHOTOGRAPHY VILLAGE”. \nThe session will be recorded on video. \n \nNowadays\, the ease of capturing images with mobile phones and tablets\, so accessible to everyone\, can make us forget the relevance that photography had at the end of the 19th century and throughout the 20th century. The photographs capture people\, the landscape and life\, moments frozen in time that allow us to recover moments that return to explain personal and collective experiences that changes have swept away and that time fades away\, but which at the same time explains who we are. \nFortunately\, Hostalric has a significant number of photographers -professionals and amateurs\, locals and foreigners- who\, since the end of the 19th century\, have recorded with their snapshots our important architectural heritage with the castle and the medieval walls\, the streets and the squares\, and the surroundings of the town\, scenes of the vicissitudes of many generations of women and men from our house. \nThe arrival of digital photography meant the democratization of this new form of art\, photography within everyone’s reach And professional studio photographers gave way\, on occasion\, to other professional photographers\, contemporary artists\, who also have representation in our town. \nHostalric\, a photography village\, wants to bring us closer to the relationship between the village and photography\, with the aim of reviving the memory of the photographers of the past and getting to know the professionals of today \nSee you there!

SUMMARY:Fototertulia (PhotoTalk) From engraving to still photo. A 19th century model that explains the pictorial composition in the still photo\, by Miquel Àngel Pintanel\, Filmoteca de Catalunya
DESCRIPTION:We announce that the next Fototertúlia (Photo Conference) will take place next Monday\, March 4\, at 6:30 p.m. in Pati Llimona. On this occasion\, the session will be conducted by Miquel Àngel Pintanel\, who will explore the origins of the pictorial composition of the still photo of the cinema of the 1940s of the 20th century to the prints of the literature of the 19th and early 20th centuries. It is entitled From the engraving to the still photo. A 19th century model that explains the pictorial composition in the still photo. \nThe session will be recorded on video. \nMonday\, March 4\, 2024 from 6:30 p.m. at 7:30 p.m.\nCivic Center Pati Llimona\, Carrer del Regomir\, 3\, Ciutat Vella – Barcelona (Free entry. Limited capacity). \n \nAfter verifying that in the 1940s tools of pictorial composition were used in the still photos of Spanish films\, two hypotheses were elaborated to explain this: that the still photos had traditional artistic training\, which was complicated \, or that they followed some model. We had to go back to the beginnings of the use of the still photo\, but also to the literature editions of the 19th century to be able to find what this model could be. \nThe sequence would be\, in summary\, the following. One of the first uses of photography to promote cinema\, from the beginning of the 20th century\, by film producers\, are a type of press kit with still photographs and a text describing the film. Towards the middle of the 10s of the 20th century\, and in a global way\, these two types of works come together to create the cinematographic novel. \nThis transition could explain how the photographs are organized and presented in the cinematographic novels and why there are still photos that use painting tools to compose. In this Fototertulia we will show what we think is the model they use.

SUMMARY:Fototertúlia (PhotoConférence) Cric i Cam et Carnaval 1864\, par Albert Domènech i Alberdi
Intitulé « Cric i Cam et Carnaval 1864 ».
